SNOWMOBILE--------------HELP!

All fixed!

Went out for a great ride all last night and my sled is DIALED. I went out today to go for a quick spin over to the gas station and when I pulled the pull start it did not return. Its a 2002 MXZX 600. Is this a hard repair? I have never pulled one apart. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated and/or repair parts or services to offer.
Thanks
Phil

What you can do, is where your recoil goes in, take a hammer and lightly tap it till it pulls back in. If it doesnt, remove it with whatever holds it on and it should come off. Then you take it to someone that knows how to repair it, like a ski-doo shop or I know a guy that works on sleds, his name is Cricket. His number is 1-315-568-6500. Tell him what is wrong and he can tell you how to fix it or ask you to bring it to him. If you can get it back in without it being taken off, after it gets warmed up again, it will work just fine, sometimes it just gets cold and hangs up, it happens to my sled all the time. If you need any more help, you can call me at 1-315-871-6699, ask for William.

Thanks buddy, I appreciate the help. I was assuming that when it sticks the spring is broken and I was going ot have to buy a new one. I havent really checked it out in the light yet. I'm assuming all I have to do to get at it is remove the expansion chamber/muffler?

well, on mine, it bolts right into the engine and your cleat dogs might be frozen up inside so it might just need to be warmed up, so if your going to start it, make sure you are ready to ride b/c your going to need to start it, then it will pull itself in or you'll have to tap on it, then go ride it for awhile and it will be warm and when you go to pull it, it should be free. If that doesn't work, then your cleat dog may be stuck in it, or your spring may be too tight or too loose to not let it move. It was happening when my dad and i were riding today. We went out to get the dinosaurs out of the barn and his cable just stuck, so we tapped it and it went back it, then it started, we rode forever and it just worked when we went to ride again.

Yeah, right where the string goes into the cover, you just tap lightly on it with a hammer or something heavy. But dont tap it too hard and break it, if your easy but put some pressure into it, the vibration should pull it right back in, is it stuck all the way out?

As far out as it can possibly go, yes.

ok, well tomorrow or when you have time, go tap it lightly and see if it goes in if not give that guy a call or try putting a heat source next to it before you take it off so it gets warm, if it doesnt work just call that guy or someone to help

Okay, thanks bro. Tomorrow is sapposed to be like 55 degrees so I'll work on it all day. Is there anyway to prevent it from happening again? Can I grease it or anything?

there really is nothing you can do, it happens because the sled engine gets cold and it sticks a little bit. It happens on my dads junker all the time. All you have to do is tap it, start it, ride it, then if you let it sit forever it might do it again. If you ride it everyday till it gets warm or so....then it shouldn't stick, it just depends on how much of an avid rider you are. If you ride everyday it wont, but it is probably just a little stuck because it has been sitting since last year, am i right?

Haha actually no. I rode it all last night, BUT I did forget to tighten the cover and the wind blew it off so maybe that would do it if any water trickled down the rope and froze.

The only place I know close-by is Armstrong Motorsports in Hamilton. Hopefully I dont need any parts. I have to inspect it first. I'm pretty sure it does need replacing soon though. When it was working, it didnt spring back very fast.

I live right near armstrong (10 minutes away). There were a few year ski-doos (you have one!) that used PLASTIC gears on that mechanism, and not steel like the later years. My room-mates 01 700 had the same thing happen.

Any chance i can buy a metal one aftermarket? I tried to fix it today but it has been raining so I didnt get in too deep. I cant get at the mechanism without removing the expansion chamber...the problem is that I cant figure out what tool can possibly get the 4 springs off that connect it to the Y-pipe. I tried every different type of plyer that I own and I was only able to get the springs off of the other side that connect to the muffler.
