98 rm125 wont start need expert help

1998 rm 125

just rebuilt by a friend

wont start sounds like its not firing makes no sound unless throttle wide open make pop sound kinda.

1. it does have spark

2. getting fresh fuel

3. new air filter,new vforce 3 reeds

4.good compression I think its like 120 or so

im not to sure about 2-strokes but would it be timing?

please help thank you.

120 seems low for a 2 stroke. Should be in the 175+ range. To check timing you need to check the mark on the stator against the mark on the case. Kind of hard to get to without pulling fly wheel (havent dealt witha 98 rm specifically just in general). Did you try and pop start it? Seems like a low compression issue to me or a plugged pilot jet in the carb.

I'd bet a dollar that your buddie put the piston in backwards ,, I see alota 2 strokes come in the shop with this problem after a rebuild

How are the reeds? Are they all chipped and frayed or something? Have you tried adjusting the idle up maybe it isnt starting because the idle is to low. Just trying to throw things out there.

Make sure the reed block is not warped b/c it could let air in where it meets the cylinder. You definitely see spark at the plug? If so, that rules out a bad kill button. Did the head and base gaskets get installed? I know you said it it getting fuel, is that because the plug is wet?

Only other thing I can think of is a blown crank seal on either side.

Crank seals are a good thought. If they look good, and you have compression, spark and fuel, it is most likely your cdi box/ignition module. This controls your timing curve and if it goes haywire will cause it to not start because your timing is off. The stator controls your static timing, but if the box is bad it will also cause your timing to be off.

Check your ground wire/contact, make sure the wire isn't compromised and the contact clean/solid.
