Stolen bike please read and help!!!

The about 2 weeks ago I purchased a bike....the guy lived in a nice neighborhood seemed to be fairly legit nothing sketchy when arriving to check the bike out. 2 newer cars in the driveway along with a Porsche claimed to be a local fireman seemed to be on the up and up for the most part. Long story short I ended up purchasing the bike from him with cash and Reviced a bill of sale signed, dated, includes vin# of the bike.  I took the bike homstand a few days later I take the bike to the local police station to get a Vin Varifiction to start the process to register the bike with DMV  with a bill of sale And the police tell me the bike is coming back as STOLE. The bike was impounded right them and there and I'm currently left high and dry out ~$2500 plus new parts I just put on the bike.

Does anyone have any experience in how to handle the situation? Am I just SOL on the cost of the bike? Can I take the former owner (who I purchased the bike from) to small claims court and get my money back if he wasn't aware the bike wstolen?

Anyone have input on how to get my money back?

if you have a bill of sale and all the paperwork backing it up, get a lawyer and you will get your money back. a $400 dollar lawyer is worth getting you money back in my eyes.
